Entertainment vs Education

Your goal as a creator is to provide value to a target audience.

I'll talk more about who that might be in the next section, but first, it's worth defining what we mean by "value".

In general, there are two categories of content:

  1. Entertainment - Anything fun, amusing, or engaging
  2. Education - Information on a given topic

There's also a third category, a hybrid called edutainment.

E.g. a video teaching a skill that's also fun to watch.

However, the first two are the main categories.

It's an important distinction, because the demand on your audience is very different:

As you'd expect, the type of value you provide in each category changes accordingly.

If I watch an entertaining video, I want to be entertained.

I want to laugh, feel something, escape my day for a moment, and forget my worries.

If I watch an educational video, I want to learn something new and/or interesting; I want help achieving a goal.

Either way, whether it's conscious or not, the thought in the back of my mind is this:

Don't waste my time.
