It’s time to figure out what you'll actually create content on.

Let me start with a reminder of why now is such a great time to be a creator:

You can talk about anything, and if the content is good, the algorithmic shift toward an interest graph means it can perform well online.

This is very different from what I'll call the "old fashioned way".

The "Old-Fashioned Way"

The traditional advice around content has been to:

  1. Pick a niche (basically just a category, such as travel, business, money, or beauty).
  2. And then "niche down" until you find something you can stand out for online.

The idea is there's so much content now that a broad niche won't work.

It's just been covered too much.

So, to stand out enough to build an audience, people say you should go narrow.

The narrower, the better.

So, you wouldn't create content about "travel".

You'd do it on budget travel in your twenties or family travel in California.

Feel free to take this approach if it speaks to you.

However, I've moved away from it.

Here's why:

It feels like being left with crumbs.
